Abstract

A significant advancement in life sciences and medicine in recent years is the discovery of humans being symbionts with microbes. These microbes play a pivotal role in human physiology, and their malfunction is linked to various modern diseases, including allergic diseases, metabolic diseases, inflammatory bowel diseases, colon cancer, and mental disorders. These diseases resulted from the modern civilization, which caused dramatic changes in human lifestyle, including hygiene practices and diet, which lack enough fiber. This finding has triggered a paradigm shift in human biology and medicine. In my laboratory, we are investigating the interrelationship between aberrant functions in the gut microbiome and modern human diseases. We recently discovered that a specific subspecies-level dysbiosis in the microbiome underlies the onset and/or progression of atopic dermatitis. Detailed understanding of microbiome at the species or subspecies level is required to fully reveal the function of microbiome affecting human physiology and diseases. Such knowledge will be translated into diagnostic means and therapy for the modern diseases, cure of which is currently difficult.
