Abstract
We study how structure and function are related in RNAs that regulate gene expression. We investigate detailed mechanisms underlying how changes in the tertiary structure of RNAs can alter the ability to interact with the polypeptides or carry out the chemical reactions. Here we show two examples of chemical regulation of RNAs that control gene expression. First, we show that binding of small molecules such as heme can change the ability of microRNA precursors to process properly. Second, we show how differently shaped RNAs are methylated to different extents and how this may lead to changes in the stability of the RNA in cells.
