Abstract

Phytochrome B (phyB) is a plant photoreceptor regulating seed germination, seedling development, vegetative growth, and leaf senescence. Red light converts biologically inactive form of phyB (Pr) to biologically active form (Pfr), whereas far-red light converts back Pfr to Pr, making phyB a light switch. Pfr also relaxes to Pr without absorbing far-red light through a process called thermal reversion. Since the speed of thermal reversion is proportional to temperature, phyB has long been suggested to be a temperature sensor. Consistently, recent studies have shown that phyB acts as a temperature sensor for hypocotyl elongation. It is not known, however, phyB of which tissue senses temperature. I will present evidence that epidermal phyB senses both light and temperature signals to regulate hypocotyl elongation and hypocotyl negative gravitropism.
