Abstract
Plant species display extreme diversity in their life‐history that involves the variation in growth and reproductive behaviors of an individual plant. Monocarpic annuals are the plant species that complete the entire life‐cycle within one year, and their reproduction is followed by the death of individuals. By contrast, polycarpic perennials survive for several years and enter the reproductive phase multiple times by cycling between vegetative growth and flowering period. Variation in life‐history contributes to the species survival in nature, and the evolutionary transitions between monocarpic annual and polycarpic perennial life‐histories have occurred frequently during the divergence of plant species. In this talk, I will discuss the life‐history evolution in plants on the basis of the molecular mechanism that underpins the divergence in reproductive patterns between annual and perennial crucifers in the cabbage family (Brassicaceae).
