Abstract


Many environmental and genetic factors that influence lifespan have been identified for the last two decades. My laboratory aims to elucidate molecular mechanisms by which intrinsic and extrinsic factors regulate lifespan by using molecular genetics of the roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans. In this talk, I will present our latest work on signaling pathways that mediate the effects of glucose-rich diets and sensory neurons on the lifespan of C. elegans. First, I will discuss how SREBP transcription factor protects animals from life-shortening effects of glucose-rich diets via promoting fat conversion processes. Second, I will focus on neuroendocrine pathways that transmit lifespan-regulatory signals from sensory neurons to other tissues. Because many findings on aging regulation in C. elegans have been shown to be evolutionarily conserved, homologous mechanisms may exist in mammals including humans.
