Abstract

Genetic information is translated to protein via genetic code. Since tRNAs are the adaptors matching triplet genetic code with the corresponding amino acids, the accurate recognition of cognate tRNAs by aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (ARSs) is crucial for the fidelity of translation process. Thus, the specific way of tRNAs by ARSs is named “the 2nd genetic code”. As the functions of tRNAs and ARSs are more unveiled, it became obvious that ARSs and tRNAs have additional roles outside of protein synthes is that are required for the higher order system generation in multicellular organisms. Based on these new findings,living organisms seem to have created a third genetic code embedded into ARSs and tRNA,the two gene decoders,that is required to build multicellular systems from unicellular organisms.  This lecture addresses how ARSs have evolved to play such a role in higher eukaryotic systems.
