Abstract
Aggregation and mislocalisation of RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) has been emerging as a new hallmark of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). With increased demand of the RNA metabolism in the brain coupled with the non-dividing nature of neuronal cells, it is not surprising that correct regulation of RBPs is critical for neuronal homeostasis. This seminar will address the characteristics of RBPs that lead to the increased propensity for aggregation and mislocalisation in neurodegenerative diseases and discuss potential mechanisms that tip the balance from reversible and functional ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complex to irreversible and pathological aggregates. Recent and current research outcomes of my laboratory in this area will also be presented.
